Figy s century in vain as Sharjah pulls off thriller

Abu Dhabi Cricket Council were left with herculean task after going down to Sharjah in a thriller in the opening round of the Inter-Emirate tournament at the Skyline University grounds on Tuesday.

Jonathan Figy stroked a well-compiled 110 off 142 balls for the visitors to post 240 all out in 50 overs but the left-handed opener s efforts went in vain as Sharjah chased down the target with four balls to spare for the loss of five wickets.

Electing to bat first, ADCC lost opener Pavan Kumar (0) early before Figy and Fazal Shahid put on 53 for the second wicket stand in 84 balls. Figy and Abhishek Prakash added a further 55 for the third wicket but consumed too many overs, 16.4, particularly the latter batsman, scoring 15 off 54 balls.

However, Figy s knock was the highlight of the inning. He hot 10 fours and two sixes, and was out in the second last over. Sharjah began the run-chase promisingly with Harikrishnan Valloli (31) and Ansh Tandon (34) sharing 76 in 107 balls. They both fell to return catches to spinners Umair Asghar and Karthik Meiyappan respectively for ADCC to pull themselves back into the game. However, the third wicket pair Mehd Asaria (48) and Brandon Martis (67) kept Sharjah in the game with a 97-run stand for the third wicket before Neil Lobo finished the job with a brisk 35 off 31 balls.

Scores in brief:

Sharjah Cricket Council 244 for 5 in 49.2 overs (Brendon Martis 67, Mehd Asaria 48, Ansh Tandon 34, Harikrishnan Valloli 31, Neil Lobo 35 not out) bt Abu Dhabi Cricket Council 240 all out in 50 overs (Jonathan Figy 110, Fazal Shahid 21, Harikrishnan Valloli 3-57).
