Prakash stays cool in Zayed Academy s victory

Abhishek Prakash played the captain s knock to guide Zayed Cricket Academy to a three-wicket win over Kricket Spero and to the summit of the 12-team UAE U17 National Academy League.

After bowling out the visitors for 109 Zayed Academy found themselves under pressure before Prakash (20 no) and Karthik Meiyappan (7 no) saw them through with 21 balls to spare at the Abu Dhabi Nursery Oval-1 on Saturday. In fact, it was Prakash who held his nerves with a well-compiled 22-ball knock with a couple of well-executed boundaries, one through the covers and the other past the bowler.

Prakash arrived at the crease at the fall of the fourth wicket at 70 but lost his partner Osama Hassan (8) two runs later as his side slumped to 72 for five in 18.1 overs.

He then saw three more wickets tumble at the other end but that didn t seem to lose his cool as he edged his side closer and closer to clinch the game in a tense finish. Utkarsh Srivastava provided the break for Zayed Academy after the visitors elected to take first lease of the wicket. He had Anirudh Jagdish (8) caught by Akhilesh Ramesh behind the wicket and Safeerullah Khan removed the other opener with a similar dismissal.

Meiyappan snapped up three wickets and Safeerullah had Aditya Prakashan (1) run out with an excellent throw from the boundary to hit the stumps before Prakash, Burhanullah Hussaini and the second run out ended Kricket Spero s inning with a ball to spare. Zayed Academy in reply lost openers Ramesh (1) and Pavan Kumar (8) to leave them at 20 for two. Fazal Shahid (21) featured in a couple of partnerships. He added 25 for the third wicket with Tayyeb Ali (15) and 25 for the fourth wicket with Hassan.

Fazal and Hassan both departed in quick succession that left Prakash with the task of navigating the ship through the rough waters, which he did admirably well to seal his team s eight win in nine games.

Scores in brief:

Zayed Cricket Academy 110 for 7 in 26.3 overs (Fazal Shahid 21, Abhishek Prakash 20 not out, Krishna Ashok 3-12, Devnath Menon 2-21) bt Kricket Spero 109 all out in 29.5 overs (Devnath Menon 31, Karthik Meiyappan 3-16, Safeerullah Khan 2-19).
