Zayed Cricket Academy got their campaign in the inaugural UAE National U17 Academy League off to a bright start after a clinical demolition of GM Academy-Sharjah.
They dismissed GM Academy for 99 in 22 overs and knocked off the winning runs in 21.4 overs for the loss of one wicket at the Abu Dhabi Cricket Council s Oval-2 on Saturday.
Osama Hassan (2) departed in the first over when the score was eight but Jonathan Figy and Justin D Souza, both UAE U 19 internationals, saw their team through with an unfinished 94-run stand for the second wicket. Figy stroked 58 not out off 63 balls. The left handed opener hit seven fours and a couple of sixes that sailed over deep mid-wicket. D Souza, the captain, supported him with a patient 51-ball knock 28 not out that contained five boundaries.
The visitors taking first lease of the wicket raced to 29 for no loss in the fourth over before Shah Faisal produced a double blow to remove the openers Harikrishnan Kannadi (10) and Haider Shah (3). Karthik Meiyappan then grabbed three wickets and Abhishek Prakash wrapped up the GM inning by taking two wickets in two overs.
In the other games, Desert Cubs had a mixed bag. The Cubs Dubai went down to G Force Academy by five wickets while their Sharjah wing emerged winners by five wickets over Sharjah Academy.
Kricket Spero raced to a seven-wicket win with more than 18 overs to spare over Emirates Cricket Training. The National Academy League has drawn 12 academy teams around the country. They will play each other once either at home or away and the top four placed teams qualify for the semi-finals.
Scores in brief:
Zayed Cricket Academy 102 for 1 in 21.4 overs (Jonathan Figy 58 not out, Justin D Souza 28 not out) bt GM Academy 99 all out in 22 overs (Karthik Meiyappan 3-9, Abhishek Prakash 2-7, Shah Faisal 2-10).
